Born in Geneva on June 28, 1712, Jean-Jaques Rousseau was a pedagogue, philosopher, musician, and botanist. His political ideas formed a substantial part of the theoretical grounds of the intellectual and cultural movement of the Enlightenment. Later on, they were also an important factor in the French Revolution.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau utmanade 1700-talets syn på barn, och hans idéer om barnuppfostran spreds över hela Europa. På 1700-talet var skillnaden mellan vuxna och barn inte definierad och barndomen var något som skulle stökas över så fort som möjligt. Från det att barnet kunde uppföra sig och tala, handlade det om att kopiera de vuxnas beteende.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau som föddes i Genève blev berömd både som filosof och författare. Bland hans kända litterära verk återfinns brevromanen Julie eller Den nya Heloïse (1761), den idéhistoriskt fascinerande Émile eller Om uppfostran (1762) om pedagogik samt hans kanske mest lästa verk, självbiografin Bekännelser (1781).

Rousseau’s mother died nine days after his birth, with the consequence that Rousseau was raised and educated by his father until the age of ten.
